If you want to put on weight, you should work out, to insure that youput on muscle and not fat. Healthy weight gain, just like healthyweight loss, takes time and requires a conscious effort to apply goodhabits.Recommended Ways to Gain WeightHave meals with the right balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and theright kinds of fat (such as unsaturated and monounsaturated fats, olive oil, canola oil, pistachios, almonds and walnuts). Heinemannsuggests the following ratio: 60%-70% carbohydrates, 10%-15% protein, and a small amount of fat.Eat foods higher in calories, vitamins, and minerals, as opposedto higher in fat or sugar. Pack more nutritious calories in eachserving. For example, you may add grated cooked eggs to mashedpotatoes, ground chicken to soups and gravies, cheese in casseroles, eggs, and soups, and nonfat dried milk in soups, shakes, milk, andmashed potatoes. If you get too full too fast, try having more high-calorie foods orslices of foods as opposed to consuming the whole thing (raisinsversus grapes, granola and Grape Nuts versus corn flakes, mango slicesversus the whole mango).Limit drinking beverages to a half-hour before and after a meal.Drink mixed juices (apple/berry, peach/orange/banana as opposed to onejuice beverages) for a higher calorie intake. With moderation, you mayadd in good fat sources to meals such as nuts, avocado, olives, andfatty fish (salmon and mackerel).Snack in between meals. Nuts, dried fruits, and yogurtare good options, but it's also important to find nutritious foodsthat you will enjoy. Have a nutritious snack before bedtime, such as apeanut butter sandwich.

  • Holy bejeebees! I wish I had a high metabolism. Is any of your family that skinny? Try talking to all your teachers or even the school nurse maybe they will help at some point. Don't try to over eat, because its unhealthy. Try to control the hunger if you're always hungry. But also, Sweetie don't worry about weight right now, you are still growing!! Just be happy with what you are now, maybe once you're done growing you'll be the curvy woman you dream to be!
  • Eat more. That simple. You don't need to "pig out on cheeseburgers," although that is certainly one way. My advice would be to focus on eating more high-fat plant foods like nuts, seeds, avocados, or plant oils (e.g. olive, coconut). You can saute or pan-fry foods; they need not be dripping in fat. You can add vinaigrettes to salads or just pour straight oil over vegetables. You can also focus on intake of starchy and higher-protein foods. Shakes are a good way to gain weight, you can easily take a protein powder, combine it with a full-fat milk, add fruit and blend. But really that should be on the back burner. Activity also helps to build muscle and increase appetite, which can also help to increase weight. This all assumes that you do not have an eating disorder, in which case the nutritional side of things does not change but you'd need to address the mental health component as well.
  • If you're 20 to 25 lbs. underweight then something is wrong and you definitely need to have a medical exam. There are several different health factors which can be causing you to be underweight and which can likely be corrected. If your doctor isn't helping you then you can't possibly be underweight because your doctor would have told your parents by now if you are underweight and examined what could be the problem. There's a big difference between being slim and being underweight. If you could provide your height and weight that would be great. If you're just slim, not underweight, then honestly I don't suggest trying to gain weight. A fast metabolism is a wonderful thing to have. Especially considering the fact that your metabolism slows as you age, so people who already have slow metabolisms will really struggle with their weight once they get older. I don't know if you're tall or not but being tall and slim is model-like and certainly nothing to be ashamed of. And if you're short then that just means you're cute and petite, another thing which is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Girls come in different shapes and you don't have to be curvy to be feminine or have guys like you. After all if that were the case then a lot of models would be single :)
  • To gain weight you need to combine protein foods with starchy carbohydrates as indicated below. Good weight gaining combinations are bread, cereals, pasta, rice, potatoes or sweet potatoes combined with meat, poultry, eggs, cheese, nuts or sea food. Peanut butter sandwiches and cheese sandwiches are good weight gaining combinations. The protein in the above combinations will help to gain extra muscles.
