Are people overweight purely because of a lack of self control?

It's a biological fact that you gain weight by eating more calories than you burn. You can eat less or workout more, either one.Being hungry won't kill you, why is this hard for people?

No, not PURELY due to lack of self control...although that is the primary factor for many (if not most)...Some people are on meds that inhibit weight loss...Some people have thyroid issues that mess with their body and their ability to maintain or lose weight...Some people have physical disabilities that make exercise difficult or impossible, and to maintain weight they may be limited to a very low number of calories, which is hard to maintain...It's not all about people simply sticking the wrong stuff in their mouth, or too much stuff...but that's the case for many, even though their reasons/excuses for doing so will vary...I was obese for a number of years...I was a stress eater, a bored eater, and simply enjoyed the taste of food...I knew my issue was of my own doing and I chose to make changes and get the weight off...it wasn't easy and I miss eating junk...I really do...I love burgers and fries, I love sweets, I love chips, etc...but I know I can't eat those things on a regular basis and maintain a reasonable weight or level of health...Sometimes a person's physical or emotional issues overpower their desire to say "no" to food they shouldn't consume...

  • There is no cut and dry answer to this singularly specific question. Of course you can cut calories, eat less or workout more. But since eating habits are almost entirely based on income, eating fewer calories may be detrimental to your health if you're not getting enough of the proper calories. Go the grocery. Healthy calories are expensive. However, empty, cheap calories (think fast food, Cheetos) are just as detrimental to proper health as too few calories...see where this is going? There are so many alternate routes to get to the answer to this question, but basically, working out isn't a cure-all, and neither is cutting calories. Eating properly WITH exercise, is key. Not everyone can afford, literally, to do both.

ha! its where everyone gets it wrong, its not about the exercise, its usually about diet. try to control your calorie intake, you'll be amazed at the result. from what you wrote, you seem to be physically active, just fix the meals. if it dont work, maybe youre just "big boned"

Need some Advice for going to the gym for Cardio (losing fat)!?

im a 17 year old guy! and the only way i have to lose weight is to go to the gym (trust me, you dont wanna know why). i weigh 189 pounds (86 kg). people say i look chubby but im as fat as ****. i wanna lose my love handles and curvy belly. on the treadmill, i walk in a fast pace for like 5 minutes but thats when my legs dont let me go any further. my hearts pumping like crazy and yes, i sweat alot. i do 2 different versions of crunches; as in crunches with different leg positions.what i really wanna know is how i can start burning fat overall properly on the treadmill. can i take rests between the 5 minutes or do i just keep going to build up stamina? could really use some help here.

Hey Eman, Im a personal trainer and there is something many do not know about cardio and that is there is a big difference in cardio vs fat burning. You have to keep your target heartrate in the fat burning zone IF it goes higher you are more or less working out your heart, which is good, but also your burning less fat. The best way to burn fat is lower impact and higher time. Go online and search on yahoo "whats my target heartrate to burn fatfat" You will put in your information (ie gender, height, weight, etc) Get a heart monitor and keep it in that zone. A low impact treadmill workout of 45 min will be much more beneficial than high impact of five minutes. Also, if you are able add weights to workout. Same thing: low impact & higher reps. Also workout upper body one day and lower body the next. Muscles need one day to recover to get maximum efficiency. Your doing great on crunches, abs can be worked out daily. Once you start losing weight, which you will ;), make sure to be aware of the dreaded plateau, which means you are no longer challenging your body enough to burn fat. You will know it when weight loss stops. When this happens, generally in a month or two, recalculate your target heart rate, or THR. Also if you do add weights I would recommend using measurements and the scale because as Im sure you have heard, muscle weighs more than fat. Keep up with all this in a little log book.
